Give up?
Curtains!
Had someone told me this trick a few years ago I never would have bought curtains or those retched dust-hoarding blinds. Not only is this a super easy DIY, it is also inexpensive which appeals to the fiscally responsible me. Enough chit-chat. Lets get started!
Supplies: First, find a really sharp pair of fabric scissors. These will make the process so much easier. Second, buy yourself some sheets. Twin size works best for most standard windows and are long enough to leave just a few inches of a "pool" on the ground. Any color will work, but I decided to go with white because it's versatile and bleach-able.
Step 1: Lay the sheet out flat. You can iron out the wrinkles if you want or toss it in the dryer for a few minutes. I did neither because I'm not a patient person - but the wrinkles worked themselves out after hanging anyways.
Step 2: Take the top hem of the sheet (the larger one) and fold it over on itself.
Step 3: Start cutting half inch to one inch slices across the hem of the sheet. You can do as few or as many as you want so long as you end on an odd number. I've seen a few people get grommets to make the curtain look more curtain-y but I was happy with just the cutting and threading method so I left it as it was.
Step 4: Put your new curtain on the rod. I made my rods using PVC pipe cut to the size of my windows, PVC end caps, and spray paint. I also bought some clearance wooden brackets from Menards for $3 a pair. In total, I spent $40 on curtains and $32 on the hardware for a grand total of $72 for eight windows. One curtain panel can range anywhere from $10-$20, and I've seen curtain rods be just as much. I saved well over $120 for window treatments.
I've had my curtains hanging in my house for a little under six months now and they have held up fine. Cute, versatile, affordable, and they had enough privacy you won't even needs blinds which will cut back on the amount of dusting you have to do. Plus, no one can tell the different they're sheets unless you tell them!
If you try it out, let me know how it goes and share pictures! I love seeing other people's DIY projects!
God bless, lovelies!
